eDNA Labs are new Labena group R&D laboratories in Zagreb, Croatia. In order to ensure a one-directional workflow and reduce the chance of contaminations, eDNA Labs are designed with dedicated rooms for water filtration, eDNA extraction, as well as for pre-PCR and post-PCR work.
Thanks to thirty years of experience in equipping laboratories in the fields of medicine, pharmacy, food and chemical industry, constant striving for excellence, following technological innovations and numerous collaborations with research and clinical institutes, faculties, public and private companies, Labena is today a strong regional group with offices in 6 countries Labena’s team of highly educated experts enables a multidisciplinary approach to projects and research providing high-quality, fast and accurate research and analytical service.
The GMP&FDA certified laboratory BIA Separations CRO in Ljubljana has been operating as part of the Labena Group since 2015 (www.biaseparationscro.com).
eDNA Labs Team
The eDNA Labs team brings together scientists from the fields of molecular biology, ecology, agronomy, microbiology and biochemistry within Labena group and partner institutions. Their knowledge enables them to carry out research and projects related to environmental issues and molecular biology expertise. This includes the development, optimization, and validation of molecular tests, as well as the use of next-generation sequencing techniques and application of bioinformatics analyses.

He holds an MSc degree in chemistry from the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb, Croatia.
eDNA Labs Research team
Teja Muha, PhD
Ecologist by heart and molecular biologist by degree. Her expertise lies in molecular ecology, detection of environmental DNA, monitoring invasive species and environmental management. Works as a researcher and head of the eDNA Research group, focusing on molecular eDNA index development for the water quality assessment. Her team is currently optimising and validating molecular assays for species-specific eDNA detection using droplet digital PCR (ddPCR).
Tine Pokorn, PhD
Agronomist with PhD in phytopathology, previously worked on hop plants viroid. As a part of eDNA Labs team he is responsible for developing species-specific detection workflows which includes planning and executing sampling and water filtration activities, DNA isolation optimisation procedures and molecular assay optimisations on qPCR and ddPCR.
Sabina Vrečko, MSc
Microbiologist with strong interest in environmental issues. Sabina is laboratory technician responsible for sample preparation, assay optimization, database curation and preparation of protocols for molecular analysis as well as application of Good Laboratory Practice (GMP) in the eDNA group.
Iva Sabolić, PhD
Ecologist and biologist with broad expertise in molecular ecology, genomics, and bioinformatics. In her role as a bioinformatician, she is responsible for eDNA sequencing data processing, quality control, and statistical analysis. As part of eDNA Labs team Iva provides support by development and implementation of bioinformatics pipelines for the analysis of NGS and omics-generated data.
Lucija Markulin, PhD
Molecular biologist with several years of experience working in laboratories in Croatia and abroad. She is experienced in using a wide range of molecular biology techniques, developing and optimizing methods, data analysis and use of bioinformatics tools. Lucija is responsible for the in silico design of molecular tests, data collection, development of the molecular protocols for qPCR and NGS techniques, and the optimization of laboratory processes. As part of Labena’s bioinformatics team, she is working on the validation of bioinformatics tools.
Ante Bubić, PhD
Chemist with a Ph.D. in the field of biochemistry with several years of experience working in a laboratory. His expertise is in the field of protein biochemistry and in silico modelling. He is working on the development of molecular tests for water quality assessment using environmental DNA – eDNA technologies. He is responsible for the eDNA molecular tests in silico design for qPCR and ddPCR, and for developing in house protocols for isolation of the eDNA.
